COBRA Health Coverage Alternatives
COBRA Health Plans
COBRA (short for Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) was constructed to provide temporary continuing coverage for terminated employees, including their dependents, if they should suddenly become unemployed. Under COBRA, a terminated employee will be able to maintain the same coverage that they had while employed, albeit without subsidization from the former employer, and with a 2% administrative fee charged by the health insurance carrier.
COBRA Costs
Most people suffer significant "sticker shock" when they see what their health insurance rates would be for the same health coverage that they previously held, without subsidization from the employer. As of late 2009, a federally funded COBRA Premium Subsidy Program was enacted to assist terminated employees pay their health insurance premiums. The Program subsidizes 65% of the COBRA premiums, but will be available only through February 28, 2010.
